#874: Fuji Mengyo Nabeyaki Udon

Got this one at Uweajimaya in Beaverton, OR on our summer vacation. Kind of looks like Jiffy Pop, doesn’t it? So you’re supposed to dump in stuff and cook it on the stove in this foil container. I’m going to use a pot. Thought I should check out Wikipedia about this variety:

Nabeyaki udon: A sort of udon hot-pot, with seafood and vegetables cooked in a nabe, or metal pot. The most common ingredients are tempura shrimp with mushrooms and an egg cracked on top.

Okay, so a metal pot will work just fine here.

Not a lot on the package to read but here’s what I found (click to enlarge).

Very dark with a strong soy flavor.

Sure is!

Finished. Added veggies, a hard boiled egg, baked chicken, and some Ajishima Salmon Furikake. The noodles are great – your standard fresh udon – nice. The broth had a soy sauce flavor with a slightly sweet back and a little seafood taste. The green onions were nice and the tempura was crunchy and tasty. The funky little star shape looking thing I didn’t know was above? It’s not bad – still not exactly sure if its supposed to be kamaboko or narutomaki or either. Has a nice little taste to it though. This is an interesting one for sure. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars – worth a look.UPC bar code 4960099310007 .

Re-Review: Nissin Demae Ramen 出前一丁 Artificial Chicken Flavor (Hong Kong)

My son Andy, my wife Kit and I walked to the local 99 Ranch Market on Friday. He decided he needed more kamaboko and wanted to pick out some ramen himself to try. Here’s one he picked (he likes all things chicken flavored) and will get to try today. He’s letting me have a bite and a slurp of broth for making it for him.

Here’s the back of the package. Note that it mentioned adding the soup base and seasoning oil although I found no seasoning oil packet. I thought I’d look at the original review I did way back – ne’ery an oil packet there either(click to enlarge).

The noodle block – good size and weight to it. This would one I would consider a hefty brick.

Finished. Andy requested some of the frozen stir-fry veggies and some of the kamaboko. Decent noodles – a little thinner and firmer than Top Ramen. The broth is a little stronger too – I would call it a slightly less Americanized flavor. Good stuff – Andy loved it! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 4897878000036 – get it here.

Curry or shoyu? Curry – hands down! The Nissin Curry Demae Ramen is out of this world delicious.

#859: Tradition Instant Noodle Soup Imitation Chicken Flavor

It’s been a while since I reviewed a Kosher instant noodle! Usually they’re pretty good. Let’s give this a try. By the way Kosher instant noodle company: I think Matzo Ball Ramen would be an extremely huge hit.

Finished. The noodles have a nice light and buttery ‘comfort texture’ that I would say is common is instants marketed towards the US market. The broth is nice and ‘comfortty’ too! Has a good chicken taste and not very salty – it’s calm. The vegetables? Not too bad – I liked the corn and carrot. This was pretty good and I liked it! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. This is a really good video about what Kosher foods are and what the symbols on different packages mean. The noodles I tried today even have a quick appearance!

#856: Little Cook Mushroom Vegetarian Premium Noodle

Here’s another onbe sent by Michelle L. of New York – thanks! This is made in Thailand and says it’s mushroom flavor. Well, let’s give it a go.

Finished. Added onion, broccoli, red bell pepper and Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The noodles are broad and flat. Pretty good – unique for a big bowl of noodles to find noodles like these, but Little Cook’s noodles are usually unique to begin with. The broth tastes like mushrooms and has a little greasiness to it. Now if you look at the center area of the above picture, you’ll see a lot of squid-like pieces and peanuts and mushrooms. These are the retort pouch contents. I am going to say that to my extreme surprise, this is probably one of the best retort pouches ever – it was good and tasty! Not a huge mushroom fan, but this was amazing. Bravo! 4.75 out of 5.0 stars – very high quality here. UPC bar code 4710249001725 – get it here.

#830: Seven & i (7-11 Japan) Premium Shoyu Noodle

Wow just look at that! Lots of bits and pieces – multiple shrimp! Looks awesome!

Finished. Added a few pieces of kamaboko. The noodles are quite decent, the broth is tasty – sweet and salty, and the bits and pieces are above and beyond! Beef, shrimp, egg – it’s really quite different from any cup I’ve had here in the US before. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars – this is amazing! UPC bar code 7901734015765 .
