#854: Long Kow’s Crystal Noodle Soup Hot & Sour

Here’s an interesting one. This one’s got bean thread, something I am not usually thrilled with. Let’s see what happens.

Here’s the side panels – click to enlarge.

The lid is clear so you can see inside!

The bean thread whorl. I think it’s probably a nest or something; I don’t know what the correct term is.

The seasonings come in their own fancy packet – as a block.

I decided this morning to make some banana bread with chocolate chips. Actually, this is the seasoning block! Crazy looking, eh?

Finished. Added some baked chicken breast and a little Sylvia’s Queen of Soul Food hot sauce. Okay so the noodles aren’t too bad – not my favorite though. they’re clear and hard to break apart with the lips. The broth is pretty good – definitely a nice hot and soup soup flavor. The veggies and bits aren’t bad – they really go nicely with the hot and sour flavor. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. Probably one of the best bean thread soups I’ve had yet. This is a wacky one!

#585: Ve Wong Artificial Onion Flavor Instant Bean Thread Bowl

And on we go with the onslaught of instant noodles that I’ve not gotten to as they don’t look all that tasty. Today we start with some onion flavored bean thread.

I really wish it was wheat flour noodles – this sounds pretty good. What I dislike about bean thread is how mushy and clumpy it is.

A couple of paclets – the big one seemed to be mostly veggies but I detected some minor amount of powder as I dumped it. The seasoned oil on the right looks alien.

Had to mess with the contrast a bit to make this shot look like much. The pic came out mostly white! Looks like bout what you’d expect from onion bean thread soup.

Here’s the deal: the noodles were pretty good for bean thread – they weren’t violently gloppy, but gloppy enough to be lame. What surprised me was the lack of flavor; I was expecting good flavor from a Ve Wong product but it’s pretty bland. Yuck. No fun. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars.

#583: Vifon Phu Gia Mien Cua Crab Flavor Instant Bean Thread

Crab flavoed bean thread from Vifon eh? Sure why not.

Back of the package…

Three packets! This should be really good compared to the last four I’ve reviewed today!

Here’s everything in the bowl. Then I read like the Baijia sweet potato thread, this stuff steeps in the bowl so the bean thread went on top and then 400mL of boiling wawa.

Here we are. I forgot it was bean thread. I had such high hopes. Well, if you like bean thread, you’ll be in gelatinous hard-to-eat noodle heaven. But if you’re like me, you’ll be disappointed. It’s like torture for me with this one because the broth and veggies are both extremely good – a very nice crab flavor and the little swirly bits floating around. But, the noodles MUST be palatable for any of these to work in my opinion and bean thread here is just too tough to swallow. 2.25 out of 5.0 stars.

Looks like an interesting documentary…

#558: Long Kow’s Crystal Noodle Soup Vegetables ( and Eggs )

Thought this looked worth trying. Vegetables and noodles. Sure why not.

Here’s the flavoring packet if you want to call it that. It says Vegetables and Eggs though… I am truly unhappy – I didn’t take a picture of this and I’m really bummed and truly sorry. It looked like a brick of freeze-dried vegetable omelet. When I poured boiling water on it, it disintegrated and started fluffing up almost immediately.

Here’s the ingredients and nutrition facts off the side of ther bowl.

Yeah… There it is. Well, it wasn’t what I’d hoped for. What did I hope for? A good bowl of noodles. I was skeptical when I saw they were bean thread. The large amount of mushroom and cabbage and odd hydrated egg was amazing. I think if this were spicy and they’d used fried noodles that I would have liked it much better. Long story short, I’m not pleased. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

#432: Ve Wong Instant Bean Thread Seafood Flavor (Bowl)

So here’s one of the noodles I reviewed during my interview with Rachel Belle at KIRO 97.3FM. I didn’t take a lot of pictures at all, but here’s a video of the making and eating of this one- it’s ghe larger of the two being tested.

So the bean thread wasn’t too bad. I didn’t like how thin the broth was though; it was kind of lackluster. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars.
