#937: Mama Shrimp Flavour (TOM YUM) Oriental Style Instant Noodles

NOTE – This was originally catalogued as a ‘Re-Review’ but actually hadn’t reviewed it before. Therefore, I am correcting this and making it the next successive review, which is #937.

Here’s something I picked up at Walmart that asked for a re-review. As I’m sure many of you have read, the stock of new varieties of noodles that I have to review has dwindled. I’m hoping that will change soon, but until them, I’m forced to re-review some older ones. This should be pretty good – a spicy shrimp Tom Yum variety from Thailand.

The back of the package (click to enlarge).

The noodle block. This is pre-seasoned and pretty good right out of the bag.

Here’s a dual packet – chili powder on the left and seasoning powder on the right.

Here we have the chili powder atop the seasoning powder.

Here’s a packet of paste.

Not a huge amount but I’m sure it is an interesting addition…

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added hard boiled egg with Krazy Mixed Up Salt, sweet onion, kamaboko and a little Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The noodles are this and kind of crumbly. The broth has a strong citrus flavor and heat – nice Tom Yum tastes to it. I would recommend it – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 052066000036. Get it here.

#475: Gefen Oriental Style Ramen Noodles Vegetable Flavor

Here’s another of the kosher noodles sent to me by Michael M. of Staten Island, NY. This one’s vegetable – kind of a strange flavor. Carrot? Celery? Zucchini? Acorn squash? What kind of vegetable? It has to be something tasty… Well, let’s check it out.

A green leafy vegetable flavor it looks to be according the the packet design. Although the chicken flavor has a packet with a blue chicken on it and chickens aren’t usually blue so my reasoning could be flawed…

Some yellow powdered seasoning.

Added two fried eggs. So Here it is all done. The noodles are decent – about what you’d expect from a domestic pack of instant noodles. The broth is nice – salty and savory. I think this would be just about perfect for a sick day as a comfort food. I liked it – was what I expected. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. One thing to note – the vegetables are not what I expected. The ingredients list onionand shitake mushroom powder, but some of the other spices are awesome – cinnamon, star anise, fenugreek, red chili, cumin and coriander. A very nice collaboration of spices!

#469: Gefen Oriental Style Ramen Noodles Chicken Flavor

Here’s another one sent to me by Michael M. from Staten Island, NY – thanks again, man! As I mentioned before, he found a few of them on the kosher aisle of a grocery store and sent them my direction.  The last review I did was imitation chicken flavor. This one’s chicken flavor. I looked at the ingredients and don’t see any chicken… Hmmm… Well, let’s try it out.

Hey this looks like the chicken packet in the other one! Well, I know that really doesn’t mean anything – I remember the Fortune brand Udon had packets that all looked exactly the same for all of their varieties.

Powdered soup base. Nothin surprising here.

…and here we are with a couple of eggs boiled with the noodles. So this is pretty good – very relaxing flavor – good chicken taste. The noodles aren’t amazing but they’re what one would expect. Awesome! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars – pretty decent for what it claims to be; kosher Top Ramen.

An interview with a guy from Gefen foods at some sort of food convention.

You know, you really owe it to yourself to ride in this car.

#427: Koka Mi Hai Cua 2 Crab Flavour Oriental Style Instant Noodles

Look at the angry little crabs! They’re saying ‘eat the noodle soup!’ I’m agreeing with them and thusly, I portend to make said soup and have it for breakfast.

So here’s something I’ve not seen before – I don’t know if this is how it usually comes or an error, but pretty neat either way. Three packets of chili! Heck yeah! I used one and now have two for later use! Score!

Some seasoned oil, a powdered seasoning and a packet’s worth of chili powder.

Dropped two eggs in with the boiling noodles. This is an amazing dish and I loved it. The noodles are perfect for instant noodles. The broth was a little creamy-ish, crabby and seafoody and the chili powder gave it a nice little spark. The eggs tied it all together – oh man this was good stuff! Going 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – yes I really liked this one!
