#662: Daikoku Shokuh Kitsune Udon

Here’s another Japanese bowl I got at Uwajimaya. The one yesterday was so good, I thought a kitsune udon bowl would be nice today.

Here’s the little sticker on the bottom of the bowl.

One single seasoning packet – pretty common with the Japanese bowls I’ve tried as of late.

Here’s everything awaiting the water. Fried tofu!!!

Finished. I added a fried egg with a dash or two of pepper, some kizami shoga (pickled ginger), some Ajishima Kimchi Furikake, some fried shallot and a little bok choy and sushinori (seaweed). The noodle were broad and full of flavor from the broth. Not very chewy but not soggy or spongy. The broth is sweet and salty and quite enjoyable. The udon is nice and sweet as well and delicious. Everything is quite nice here. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPc barcode 4904511604046 .

Here’s a Cooking With Dog where they make Omurice. Omurice is well known amnong ramen junkies as it appears notably in the film Tampopo.

#658: Paldo Hwa King Cup Noodle Soup

Hey look! Mega-enormous Korean noodle bowl! Found this one at H Mart in Lynnwood, WA. Had the pack and the cup – now we’ll find out Hwa-ssup with this enormous King Cup! Yes we will. Yes.

Here’s all the info you could possibly want to know.

A single packet of powder seasoning – feels heavy.

Holy moly – yep, that’s a big mound of red, alien combating powder!

I went for it; I let the noodles steep in the cup for two minutes and then stirred them and added an egg right smack in the middle and re-covered. Added some Ajishima Kimchi furikake, baby bok choy and a couple squirts of Texas Pete hot sauce. Noodles are pretty good – a little soft. The broth is the highlight here – red spicy heat! The veggies were here and there – decent amount. If you’re looking for a spicy noodle, this is the one, especially if you like Korean noodles. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 648436100620 – here’s the pack version.

This is a really cool video – and this guy in the beginning is really relaxed.

This is kind of interesting.

#657: Dragonfly Instant Noodles Onion Flavor

Another pack of Dragonfly brand noodles from China… Onion was great in a big bowl version – how will it be in a pack? Let’s see…

Here’s the back of the packaging.

Three packets – clockwise from top left we have seasoned oil, powder seasoning and veggies.

Here are the seasonings on a plate – the oil was very aromatic and had a very nice onion scent.

Alas, our poor noodle block has been broken in transit from store to home! Here’s a small chunk of it.

Finished! I added an egg while cooking the noodles. Got a little baby bok choy to toss in at 99 Ranch Market as well as some Ajishima Kimchi Furikake rice seasoning. The noodles were very nice as usual. The onion flavor was perfectly balanced with the saltiness of the broth; not overpowering and not weak.  The veggies were regular but not extremely abundant. Good bowl of noodles – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 721557450949 .

The Texas Onion Festival 2011 – This looks like a rad place to go get onion rings!

Booker T. & The M.G.s doing ‘Green Onions’ – I got to see these guys in the 90’s at Bumbershoot for maybe 20 minutes – was awesome!

#640: Master Kong Artificial Spicy Beef Flavor Instant Noodle

Sadly, this is last of the Master Kong varieties sent to me by Chad B. of Highland, Illinois – thanks again Chad – your stickers went out in the mail yesterday!

Package back.

Three packets – liquid base at top, veggies lower right and powder seasoning lower left.

Here’s everything waiting for the boiling water.

Finished! Added two fried eggs with a little Cavender’s Greek seasoning, some bok choy, a slice of processed cheese and a few dashes of Texas Pete hot sauce. Rad stuff. The noodles were of good quality and very nice. The broth was spicy and a hint of sweet – just perfect. The extras added a fullness to the meal. All in all, very excellent! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars! UPC barcode 6909146402386 .

‘Master Kong’ translates to Confucius. Here’s a biography about Confucius.

Special Re-Review: Nong Shim Shin Ramyun Black Premium Noodle Soup / EatYourKimchi.com Recipe Mash-Up

So this guy named Dave P. posted a YouTube video on the Ramen Rater Facebook page showing some people in Korea making a bowl of Shin Ramyun a little different that I’ve made it in the past. I thought I’d try to get the ingredients and give it a try. Here’s the video:

Anyways, I had a pack of Shin Ramyun Black I got at Uwajimaya in Seattle and though ‘hey, let’s give it a try!’ Here we go.

Here’s the back of the package. This was from the original review.

First, the noodle block. Round! Fits great in the pot! Very thick too – lots of nice Nong Shim noodles!

The three magic packets: the big green one has veggies and nice little beef bits. The red is the spicy soup base and the bottom one is the very nice smelling pack! Very onionny.

Again from the original review. Green pack top, red lower left and gold packet lower right.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find the odeng. I went with the fact that this is Shin Ramyun Black had the extra word ‘Black’ in it and considered that a replacement ingredient. Really wish I would’ve found it though!@ Next time. Here’s the might frothed egg.

Bok choy!

Finally, the slice of processed cheese. This is a slice of Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Cheese. I wonder if the cheese in Korea was Korean cheese? Interested to know.

Finished. This was really good – as for the noodles, here’s what I posted in the original review:

The noodles are of a good quality. They are chewy but not overly so. There is also a happy aundance of noodles, making for a decent sized meal. The broth is fine –  nice spiciness that you would expect from Shin Ramyun but it has an added depth and richness. I taste a lot of onion, garlic and meaty tones. As for the veggies and beef, I think that’s where this bowl shines. The beef is excellent – like little pieces of steak amongst the noodles – chewy and they taste fresh and good. The vegetables re-hydrate very nicely – and they aren’t tiny little bits! They’re of a decent size and of good quality. Long story short, I would happily say that this is one of the better South Korean instant noodles I’ve tried, possibly ranking up in the top two or three. I will say I like it better than the original Nong Shim Shin Ramyun as well. I’m giving this one 4.75 out of 5.0 stars. Why not 5.0 stars? Well, I would have liked a little more of the beef!

Adding the extra ingredients and using the EatYourKimchi.com recipe, I’d jump it up to 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – the egg was nice but the bok choy and surprisingly the cheese really round things out and make it even better! The cheese makes the broth a little heartier. The UPC barcode is 031146013524 and you can get it here. Thanks for the post to Simon and Marina at EatYourKimchi.com! Very good stuff!

The Gaming Edition of Wonderful Adventure Now Korea (WANK)

Then it totally started dumping snow as soon as I finished the noodles!
