#867: Indomie Mi Instan Rasa Coto Makassar

This is a real treat – this is one of the varieties not available in the United States and was kindly sent by Edwin N. of Vancouver, BC! Thank you again so much! So what is Coto Makassar anyways? Well, here’s something I found here:

Coto? Nope, I am not misspelled the word to Soto (popular Indonesian dishes). Its a local name for the traditional food from South Sulawesi, a soup that consist of meat, specifically the innards of cow, and mixed with spices like galangal and pepper. Galangal is also known as Blue ginger, Alpinia galanga, or lengkuas in Indonesian name.

Makassar in the name refers to the capital city of South Sulawesi, where this unique dishes is very popular as the local traditional food.

Wikipedia says:

Coto Makassar or Coto Mangkasara (Makassarese), is an Indonesian culinary food originating from Makassar, South Sulawesi. It is a soup with seasoning broth made from starch.[1] The main content of this soup is beef and it can be mixed with innards such as intestine, liver, lungs, heart, tripe, or cow brain.[2]

Coto Makassar is usually served with Burasa or Ketupat.

Soup’s on – let’s try it!

Was very hard to read – black deep red – so I used some Photoshop magic to make it easier. Click to enlarge.

The noodle block.

Dry seasoning powder and chili powder.

Dark colored chunky base with the chili powder on top.

Seasoning oil packet.

Curious – smells kind of like peanut butter.

Fried onion!

Nothing better than a little fried onion on top!

Finished. Added some grocery store frozen stir-fry veggies, a hard boiled egg with Krazy Mixed Up Salt and some Dua Belibis. Noodles are good and work well in soup. Nice texture. The broth Has a very deep and dark color. Has a spicy and a funky beef taste – kind of a spicy vegetable beef kind of thing going on. Good stuff. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 089686043051 .

Short film showing the preparation of Coto Makassar.

This is one bizarre documentary – “Heavy Metal Parking Lot” – Judas Priest fans in a parking lot at a show in 1986 – quite interesting.

#858: Indomie Mi Instan Rasa Mi Cakalang

Haven’t had an Indomie in a while! This one’s Cakalang. Cakalang is also known as Skipjack tuna. Been looking forward to this.

Back of the packaging. Anybody know if that mention of Indomie Kreasi – just a recipe or another product altogether? Click to enlarge.

The noodle block.

Powdered base and chili powder.

Here’s the chili atop of the seasoning powder.

You guessed it – seasoned oil!

A little bit of color.

What’s this?

Powdered tuna!

Finished. Added onion, red bell pepper, broccoli, and a fried egg with Dua Belibis and Krazy Mixed Up Salt. The noodles are good – chewier than usual Indomie – and good! #810: ABC Selera Pedas Mi Goreng Hot Chicken Lemon Flavour

Yep – another new one from Indonesia that was sent by Meilina K. of Jakarta! Thank you very much! I haven’t tried this brand’s noodles before, but I am familiar with ABC’s Kecap Manis (sweet soy sauce).

Back of package

The noodle block.

The dry seasonings: powdered base on left and chili powder on right.

Here they are co-mingling.

The liquid additions. From left to right: sweet soy sauce, sweet and hot chili sauce and finally a seasoned oil.

A lot of liquid!

Hmm what’s in here – it’s not labeled…

Fried onions to sprinkle on top at the end!

Finished. Added some veggies, a fried egg with pepper, some pickled ginger and some Dua Belibis. What’s Dua Belibis? Well, someone mentioned that I should try it with Mi Goreng last month and boy, were they right! It’s a sweet and spicy chilli sauce kind of like Sriracha but it’s from Indonesia. Honestly, I think I like it much more! The noodles are of a nice quality and not too firm, not mushy at all. The flavor it great – like it says, it’s a spicy and lemony combo. The sweet soy sauce really goes well and ties everything together. Damn good! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 8992388112401 .

There were some seriously awesome weather events around here this weekend – a lot of thunder and lightning storms! Here’s footage of our trip to my folks place and some lightning around Anacortes, Washington.

Here’s the commercial for these noodles

#807: SuperMi Mi Instan Super Rasa Ayam Bawang

Here’s another one from Meilina K. of Jakarta, Indonesia! Thank you! So what is Rasa Ayam Bawang you ask? Simple: Garlic Chicken Flavor! Sounds awesome! Oh, but wait – when I translate onion to Indonesian it says bawang too. Uh oh – I’m confused. Can anyone make a comment as to this? It would be greatly appreciated! UPDATE – Just got the comment I was looking for:

Opaq Lc commented on #807: SuperMi Mi Instan Super Rasa Ayam Bawang

bawang = onion; bawang putih (white onion) = garlic

Hey big thanks!

The back of the packaging.

The noodle block.

The dry packets – powdered base on the left and chili powder on the right.

Here’s the powder seasoning with the chili powder atop.

Kinda fuzzy – it’s the seasoned oil.

Here’s the oil in a sake cup.

Finished. Added some onions, Fresno peppers, a fried egg, some baked chicken, pickled ginger and Huy Fong Sriracha hot chili sauce – and pepper. The noodles were nice – fluffy and tasty. The broth was excellent – had a reeally good chicken flavor and the chili powder gave it a nice little kick. Great stuff! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 089686914467 .

#802: Sarimi Isi 2 Mi Goreng Rasa Ayam Kecap

Hey now this sounds good – chicken with soy sauce! Thank you to Meilina K. of Jakarta, Indonesia for thew donation!

Here’s the back of the package.

The noodle blocks.

Powdered seasoning and chili powder.

Here’s the seasoning powder with the chili powder on top.

Soy sauce and seasoned oil.

Here’s the content are in a bowl – as you can see, the oil and soy sauce separate.

Ah – the garnish!

Just figured it out – these are mixed veggies that get cooked in with the noodles.

Finished. Added a fried egg with some Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce on top, some veggies, some baked chicken with Lindberg-Snider Red Baron BBQ Seasoning and a little kizami shoga (pickled ginger). The noodles themselves are quite good – not too chewy, not too weak. The flavor it nice – chicken and spicy with a hit of the sweet soy sauce. The veggie bits are kind of hard to find and not extremely impressive. Really tasty stuff! 4.5 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 089686048704 .
